    upakovka and interplastica 2020: Russian Market Back on Track

    At the last edition of the trade fair duo comprising interplastica, International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber and upakovka – Processing & Packaging, there were already signs that the Russian market was moving out of the trough again – at least for the packaging and related processing industry as well as for the plastics and rubber industry. At this year’s editions of the two trade fairs held at the Central Exhibition Complex Expocentre in Krasnaya Presnya from 28 – 31 January there were clear indications of stabilisation. A total of 937 exhibitors from 40 countries attracted approx. 24,950 visitors, mainly from Russia and the neighbouring states. The mood in the halls was good and exhibitors praised the high quality of leads.

    As a member of the interpack alliance upakovka, with its ranges in the packaging and related processing industry, addresses the target groups, food, beverage, confectionery, bakery, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, non-food and industrial goods. The food industry is one of the most important manufacturing industries in Russia and of high strategic relevance. Since the start of the food embargo this industry has experienced stable growth and boasts high added value. Russia continues striving to support the increase in domestic production to counteract the dependence on imports of some products. In late 2019 the Russian President Vladimir Putin therefore adopted a “food doctrine” that stipulates further increases in the self-sufficiency rate for the most important staple foods.

    SAVE FOOD - From Food Loss to Circular Economy

    The purpose of the event is to present local and global b2b cases that are already actively working or are just putting circular economy principles into operation to reduce food loss and food waste. In this section, we will discuss the existing barriers and whether business in Russia manages to earn when switching to a new, more sustainable production model.

    upakovka 2020 receives official business support from "OPORA RUSSIA"

    All-Russian Non-Governmental Organization of Small and Medium Business "OPORA RUSSIA" confirms that upakovka 2020 was included in the list of officially supported events in 2020.

    Also, Special Commission on the Beverage Industry Development of "OPORA RUSSIA" will support the business conference dedicated to the packaging technologies for the beverage sector, which will take place on the third day of upakovka on the 30th of January 2020. The conference will be organized by Russian Bottled Water Producers’ Union (BWPU), Russian Union of Juice Producers (RSPS), the Union of Soft Drinks and Mineral Water Producers and Messe Düsseldorf Moscow.

    "OPORA RUSSIA" is a platform for an effective professional dialogue between owners and managers of small and medium-sized enterprises and representatives of federal executive bodies, regional authorities and municipalities, supervisory bodies, infrastructure for small and medium business support, as well as representatives of the expert community.

    Marked uptick in the propensity to invest at upakovka and interplastica 2019

    The Russian market seems to be finally moving out of the trough at least as regards the packaging sectors and related process industries and the plastics and rubber industry. Impressive proof of this has been provided by the two trade fairs upakovka – Processing and Packaging and interplastica, 22nd International Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber, which drew to a successful close after four trade fair days on 1 February 2019. 25,000 visitors came to the AO Expocenter in Krasnaja Presnja, Moscow to seek information on the extensive ranges displayed by 950 exhibitors from 32 countries.

    After a period of stagnation in 2016 and a -2.8 % recession in 2015, Russia saw a new growth phase start in 2017 with 1.5 % GNP growth. Four years after the sanctions were imposed and the oil price dropped, the Russian economy has adapted to the new circumstances and managed to grow again.

    Visitor Registration for upakovka 2019 Starts

    Starting immediately, visitors can register for upakovka 2019 free of cost under The most important Russian trade fair of the packaging industry and the related processing industry takes place at the AO Expocentre Krasnaja Presnja exhibition centre in Moscow from 29 January to 1 February, 2019.

    After a positive trend with a corresponding increase in visitors to last year’s fair was already noted at the beginning of this year, early signs for 2019 are promising once more: After cautious consumption during the years of recession, Russian consumers are now increasingly reaching for high-quality packaged foods again. The sale of soft drinks is also rising. At the same time, Russia is resolutely continuing its policy of import substitution. Thanks to state support and subsidies, the percentage of locally produced products has increased. For the further processing of these products, Russian and international companies are unabatedly investing in the development and expansion of their local production capacities, boosting the demand for packaging, processing and bottling/filling technology in the process.

    Extremely positive feedback from the Russian market

    The positive feedback received lately from the Russian market and, in particular, from the packaging industry and the related processing industries as well as plastics and rubber has now been confirmed very emphatically at the two trade fairs upakovka – Processing and Packaging and interplastica (the 21st International Plastics and Rubber Trade Fair). The upswing in major market segments is leading to strong demand for packaging as well as plastic and rubber. The manufacturers of these products are investing as much as they can in modern production technologies and materials, in order to be able to satisfy the increasingly exacting requirements made by their customers. More than 900 companies from 30 countries presented their innovations at the two trade fairs in the AO Expocenter in Krasnaja Presnja from 23. to 26. January and were unanimous in reporting a tremendous response and impressive business success. 24,900 experts, mainly from all over Russia and from the neighbouring countries, visited upakovka and interplastica. 23,000 visitors were registered in 2017.

    Werner M. Dornscheidt, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH, was satisfied with the trade fairs: “To the extent that the Russian economy is developing positively and reliably, Russian companies are taking advantage of the two leading industry showcases. This is where they can get to know the new developments on the world market and enter into intensive negotiations with the suppliers directly. The exhibitors that maintained a consistent presence in Russia under poorer market conditions as well are now benefitting to a particularly large extent from their good contacts in the industry. In addition to the conclusion of many sales contracts, the high quality of the demand was a very important sign that an economically attractive future is beginning.”

    upakovka 2018: Renowned Exhibitors and Extensive Programme of Side Events

    A very positive exhibitor response can already be seen for upakovka 2018 to be held at the AO Expocentre Krasnaja Presnja in Moscow from 23 to 26 January.

    The German participation is again bigger than in previous years and the Italian pavilion will also house more companies than at the past upakovka. Alongside high-calibre German exhibitors such as Krones, KHS, Rovema, Theegarten-Pactec and Jokey, OMAG, G. Mondini and the Aetna Group will be representing Italy. Add to this other members of the Italian Machinery Manufacturers’ Association UCIMA, which also features among the exhibitors and now officially supports upakovka. Russian companies are also very well represented at the event in Moscow. They include Danaflex, a leading Russian supplier of flexible packaging films as well as numerous companies from the beverage segment such as Stanco LLC, AFR OOO and PET-FORMAT, to name but a few.

    Our company, APO Aleko-Polimery, views participation in upakovka 2017 as successful. We expected interest in our produce and planned meetings and personal interaction with counterparty decision makers. Our expectations have proved above and beyond correct, with the number of meetings exceeding original estimates. In our opinion, the reason for this success lies in a good location of our booth in Forum, an extensive information campaign directed at market players and a highly respectable image of Messe Duesseldorf exhibitions. The fair as always impressed with a high level of organisation; any arising more or less challenging situations, naturally occurring in the context of process management of such complexity were resolved in a reasonably speedy fashion. For these reasons our company is prepared to take part in the upakovka fair next year.

    Russian market is gaining momentum again

    There is confidence in Russia about the year that has just begun: following a difficult period, dominated by political tensions, a drop in the oil price and a weak rouble, experts are now working on the assumption that the domestic economy will be moving out of recession. The World Bank is forecasting economic growth in Russia for 2017 too. Western companies are anticipating an upswing and see this as confirmation of their policy of maintaining their business contacts in crisis years as well. upakovka, the 25th International Trade Fair for Processing & Packaging and interplastica, the 20th International Trade Fair Plastics and Rubber, have now demonstrated in Moscow that this positive outlook for the future applies in particular to the plastics, rubber and packaging sectors and related processing industries. Developments in major consumption segments are leading to growing demand in the production of plastics and rubber products as well as packaging. Some 800 companies from 33 different countries presented their innovations at the SAO Expocenter exhibition site in Krasnaja Presnja from 24 to 27 January.

    23,000 experts from all over Russia and from the neighbouring countries attended the two trade fairs. 20,900 visitors were recorded in 2016. “It is now paying off for the international exhibitors at upakovka and interplastica and that they have maintained their presence in Russia and have remained in contact with their business partners there”, concludes Werner M. Dornscheidt, CEO of Messe Düsseldorf. “They are benefitting now that business is gaining momentum again. The atmosphere in the halls was remarkably good, the exhibitors talked about extremely interested businesspeople who were keen to place orders too. Trade visitors take the unique opportunity that is offered here to familiarise themselves with the new developments on the world market and to negotiate directly with suppliers.”

    There continues to be strong demand for western technology at Russian companies. And there continues to be a requirement for substantial investment: processes and product quality are in particular need of further optimisation in the manufacturing of consumer goods, food and packaging. The visitors were as a result very positive in their response to the wide range of different companies and the product innovations, which gave them a valuable insight into trends and future market potential. Both exhibitors and visitors approved of the new hall layout at the exhibition site (interplastica in Halls 1, 2 and 8, upakovka in the hall forum).

    The high level of interest in innovative technologies at upakovka showed itself not only in the large stream of visitors, but also in new special thematic areas at the trade fair. The innovationparc, for instance, had a widely noticed premiere, after it had already established itself successfully at interpack in Düsseldorf. The Forum was well frequented on all the days of the trade fair, and visitors appreciated the large amount of information that was available on selected innovations and enjoyed the opportunity to discuss creative, forward-looking packaging solutions. One thematic area that was particularly popular was “75 Years of PET”, organized mainly by the food processing and packaging machinery association within VDMA (the German Machinery & Plant Manufacturers’ Association), with thematic support from the German Industrial Association of Plastics Packaging Manufacturers (IK). This is also where well-known big companies in the PET sector – such as KHS – provided information on current tendencies and trends as well as on recycling.
